There exist two types of farmers markets that is the approved markets and the public markets. The difference between these two is that the approved markets are registered under the Alberta Agriculture and Forestry and are run by a couple of guidelines and they also enjoy certain privileges that public markets do not such as sponsorship. The public markets are those that are owned by an individual and are not approved by the AF.

The approved markets have to abide by the rule that eighty percent of their vendors are local. The public markets do not have to abide by this rule. Also, in the approved markets, all the vendors can share one permit, for public ones each vendor has to have their own permit and are required to meet health standards.
